Through a virtual act, the University of Murcia (UMU) presented on Tuesday, February 16, 2021, an innovative project mainly focused on students and the institution itself in order to implement digital transformation in its administrative processes. Pedro Miguel Ruiz Martínez, Vice Chancellor of Strategy and Digital University, was in charge of carrying out the presentation.

To this act, UMU's personalities such as José Luján , rector of the University; Miguel Motas , Employment, Research and Universities Minister and Second Píriz Durán , Academic and International Director of Planet Training and Universities.

digital transformation plan arises in order to apply the objectives of the digital strategy to the university and give answers to the needs that the University of Murcia and other institutions will have to face during the next few years.

This plan is based mainly on seven strategic lines. Each will address different ideas for the digital transformation .

Among its different objectives, Ruiz Martínez wanted to highlight, for example "to reduce the huge bureaucracy that university teachers have to endure and also facilitate the academic life of students .

With the implementation of digital transformation , universities are found at a turning point, having to adapt their outdated system to these new technological changes, otherwise they would be left off. "We are at a key point in which universities that do not bet on digital transformation are out," said Ruíz Martínez.

Digital Transformation Plan

Fidelize the relationship with students and graduates, supporting teaching through the incorporation of new educational technologies that allow the impulse of personalized learning.

Establish that the evaluation system is carried out by digital form, by using an application capable of qualifying whether the student is able to assimilate the contents or not. To greatly reduce the controversy arising with non -face -to -face exams.

Get greater employability of the graduates . Through systems that allow adapting practices to the needs of students and companies thus improving the student's job insertion rate. Speeding up certifications and recognition of companies , so that the student can include them in their labor demands.

The research will be one of the fundamental elements in this digital plan together with providing training and supporting tools for researchers and facilitating the participation of our researchers from different communities.

Another of the strategic lines covered by the digital transformation is the digital administration , if you want to achieve the objectives related to productivity and efficiency.

They bet on the creation of a "Smart Campus" to convert UMU's university complexes into smart campuses, thus improving the university life of teachers and students. This section is mainly focused on facilitating the mobility and safety of the university community in the Campus , where sustainability will be prioritized through energy efficiency and health care and the environment.

The digital transformation plan details that with the creation of the "Smart Campus" objectives will be achieved : providing tools to improve social, sports and leisure experience on campus, so that they become experimentation laboratories .

The lighthouse of the digital transformation of the region

During the presentation of this project, Second Píriz , he pointed out that the University of Murcia "must be the lighthouse of the digital transformation of the region", highlighting the importance that more and more, digitalization is tending in society in general and education in general.

Finally, the rector of the University of Murcia, José Luján, highlighted the UMU's commitment to respond to all these proposed challenges, " not only for the improvement of the institution, but because with it the whole of Murcia's society advances."

Luján, accompanied by the Minister of Universities, hopes to have the support of the funds of calls Next Generation and the European Program. Luján positively valued the awareness of the planned reception of said funds that will allow to meet the objectives proposed in the plan.

Finally, Miguel Motas , said that to this project, the added value that the University of Murcia leads the Crue-TIC working group , dedicated exclusively to the digitalization of universities, must be added.
